Every other expensive premium mouse needs software for configuration only, not for the actual operation. The reason for this being essential is, that ALL mouse software I know of, is unreliable, bloated and resource hungry, at least compared to other quality software. It's a useful functionality (keeping settings onboard) that makes us pay ridiculous prices for a simple computer mouse ($50 and up for a mouse is ridiculous, right?).
